5 ways to accelerate your prophetic growth

Updated: Sep 23, 2019

If you're one of those people that are excited about the prospect of the scripture that says 'My sheep hear My voice' but frustrated by the reality that somehow you are stuck in your ability to hear from God here are 5 quick things you can do to accelerate your prophetic growth.

1. Prioritise people in your life who are excelling in hearing the voice of God!

Iron does indeed sharpen iron and there is nothing that makes a prophetic person duller than associating with people who have zero interest or desire to hear God's voice. Sadly, most Christians fit the bill of those who have no interest in hearing God's voice. If you ask most Christians what their priority is, it is entering heaven, yet the prophetic persons priority is having heaven enter them. You are simply not content being a 'Sunday - Sunday' Christian, you want heaven to invade you! When you can learn to prioritise people and churches in your life that are honouring the prophetic then and only then will you begin to grow! Why? Because the prophetic dies in the place, church or home where it is dishonoured. Honour to the prophetic is like water to the fish.

Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home." He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. Mark 6:5

What a shame, that the God of the impossible was limited to a town, relatives, a home and a church that did not honour hearing the voice of God. If God couldn't do anything in the place of dishonour what makes you or I think that we can? Sometimes you just have to pack your bags and move to the vicinity where the genuine prophetic lifestyle is being celebrated and not tolerated.

2. Embrace the Prophetic lifestyle

It never ceases to amaze me how many people want the prophetic to be another tool on their tool belt. Actually to walk in the prophetic does not mean that you are an elitist but it does mean that your decision to associate with a certain group of people may come across as elitist unintentionally. However, the prophetic is a lifestyle and not just another tool on the Christian tool belt. I hate to borrow this example but hear my heart.

When a homosexual embraces a homosexual lifestyle. He or she knows that their life will dramatically change because of the choice that they have made to come out! Homosexuals are coming out of the closet but prophets are not coming out of the caves! And the ones that are, do not realise that the first responsibility of embracing a new lifestyle is to build a community of others within that lifestyle. Terrible analogy I know but I hope you understand that the sooner you embrace the fact that the enemy is going to attack you because you carry revelation the better. The sooner you stop complaining about your trouble, the sooner you can start seeing it as par for the course!

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 1 Peter 4:12

3. Self Activate

Whilst it's great to have a practice budddy, the prophetic can be self activated. So many prophets are waiting for a platform before they prophesy. "Well, Tomi, it's good for you because you have platforms, I don't have anybody.'

Before I had a platform I like you had a revelation. Revelation is for your elevation not the other way around. Your ability to steward the revelation God gives you is your platform to the next level. Prophets who wait all their life for a big influential platform have missed their most powerful intellectual property and that is the revelation itself. The platform doesn't create influence the revelation creates influence!

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. Proverbs 25:2

God exalts you based on your ability to search out concealed truth! His glory becomes your 'glory' or 'lifting' when you search out the secrets of God. The density of your voice is your platform and when you learn that, you will call people to the desert if you have to.

About that time John the Baptist came and began preaching in the desert area of Judea. John said, “Change your hearts and lives because the kingdom of heaven is coming soon.” John the Baptist is the one Isaiah the prophet was talking about. Isaiah said: “This is a voice of a man who calls out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way for the Lord. Make the road straight for him.’” Isaiah 40:3 John’s clothes were made from camel’s hair. He wore a leather belt around his waist. For food, he ate locusts and wild honey. Many people went to hear John preach. They came from Jerusalem and all Judea and all the area around the Jordan River. Matthew 3:1+

Constantly using your gift, whether it's through prophetic writing, prophetic singing or having a word of the Lord for your Nation. Practice, practice and practice.

But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:14

4. Find an Elijah

Find someone whose ability to hear from God is something you choose to emulate. I can't tell you what to do in this area but I can tell you what I did. One day God told me

'discipleship without proximity is a fan club.'

Given that new truth I decided to move my whole family to Windsor just so I could be near Dr Sharon Stone. Her prophetic grace and character stood out to me above any other prophet I had ever met in my life. Till date my lfie is an endless hungry pursuit of the God on her life. I think we drank the 'don't follow a man follow God' coolade and somewhere along the line a religious spirit hijacked many of us. We still need to follow men of God to access the God behind the men (or women). We need to attatch our lives to those who brillialintly demonstrate not just the voice of God but the heart of God and at all costs be willing to forgo temporary pleasure to sit at their feet and learn. Your Elijah is the catalyst that can release something upon your life beyond anything they have ever carried.

5. Risk

Faith is spelt RISK! The prophetic is a risk game and frankly, if you're waiting on a spouse, a family member, a pastor or a friend to agree with who God has called you to be before you step into it, then my friend you are going to be waiting a long time. God doesn't just call the prophet to prophesy alone but to embody the prophetic lifestyle, part of which which is an ability to be timely. Everything has a time and every time has a wind, it takes immense courage to trust the wind of God. If you miss a wind of God moment, you may have to wait for it to recycle and trust me the risk is worth it, well at least far more worth it than missing the moment to do what God had called you to do and then find yourself stuck. The revelation of a lifetime must be seized within the lifetime of the revelation.
